What is a troll? According to UrbanDictionary.com a troll is :
“One who posts a deliberately provocative message to a newsgroup or message board with the intention of causing maximum disruption and argument”
Trolling is a phenomenon that occurs every day on the net on many locations all to serve the same purpose which is to make people angry for no reason. Why do people do such things? They do it for many reasons, I believe the main reason they do it because they can remain anonymous and get away with it without there being any severe repercussions to them.
I myself have “trolled” many a person online because I knew they did not know who I am and that they would have no way to figure out who I am and for a reaction. Of course I do not go the the extreme lengths that some people do, I would just troll a little for a laugh then stop. The term “Don’t Feed the Trolls” is an online internet meme that means to not give a reaction to people who are trolling, because that is the main reason as to why people troll, to get a reaction like I said before.
A meme according to UrbanDictionary.com is:
Meme :An idea, belief or belief system, or pattern of behavior that spreads throughout a culture either vertically by cultural inheritance (as by parents to children) or horizontally by cultural acquisition (as by peers, information media, and entertainment media.
Youtube video of a bunch of guys picking up girls with memes:
Most of the time I just laugh at people who troll because it is usually funny, but after the discussion in class I realized that many of the things that trolls post are indeed racist, and the question that was raised in class was that if trolling was the same thing a racism. In my opinion it is not. First of all most of the time when people troll they do it for a reaction out of the community, and online communities are mostly anonymous and contain people from races, gender and ages from all over the world so in a sense the internet is a biggest melting pot community of all. Of course there are sites that cater to people with certain tastes and what not but most online communities are mixed and people really don’t care.
Here is an example of online trolling:
What basically occurs in this thread on the forum is a guy makes a fake “troll” account on facebook and then proceeds to “hit” on females and posting their responses on the forum for the “lulz” and entertainment for other forum users. In return he gains a reputation get rep points which signifies him as one of the more prominent users on the forum giving him respect. All the while the poor people he is trolling will not know that he is trolling until he they either figure it out themselves, someone from the said forum tells them, or if he tells them himself. In most cases they people getting trolled will not even know that they are getting trolled and everyone gets a good laugh and they end up feeling good.
Unlike racism, trolling can be used for good things also. An example of this would have to be in the case of this woman:
the online community rose up and harassed her, and in the end it turned out she her self was trolling, and she was tired of getting pizza.
Trolling can be good and bad, but it just depends on the situation that the trolling is being done in. Well that’s what I think anyway.
